The Truth about Mental illness

Mental illness
The Truth About Mental illness

Many people still fear and misunderstand people who have been diagnosed with mental illness. People with mental or psychological disorders are often perceived to be potentially dangerous, or, at the very least, capable of causing physical harm to others. Psychiatric conditions take on many forms, just like physical illnesses do. In general, a person with a psychological disorder is confused and does not have a normal process of thinking or reasoning.

A person with a psychological disorder does not speak, behave, and relate with orders in a normal fashion. Mental illness often results in a lower capacity for coping with the ordinary demands of everyday life. Mental illnesses can affect persons of any age, gender, race, religion, or income. This illness is not a result of personal weakness, lack of character, or poor upbringing. Although symptoms of mental illnesses can sometimes be disturbing, recovery is usually possible in almost all cases.

It is human nature to fear what we do not understand. Aside from the fear that is usually elicited in a person who encounters a person with mental illness brings fear to people, not to mention that it carries a certain stigma that generates negativity when talking about mental illness. Because of this stigma, many people hesitate to get help for a mental health problem for fear of being ostracized or looked down upon. It is unfortunate that this happens because effective treatment exists for most mental illnesses. What is worse is that the stigma experienced by people with mental illness can be more destructive than the illness itself.

Myths are incorporated with such mental health problems. People should know the truth, for they will continue to deny the existence of mental illness or even avoid the topic entirely. They say that people with mental illness are dangerous and violent. While some mentally disturbed individuals have committed crimes or have hurt other people, it is certainly untrue that all persons with psychological problems are capable of harming others around them. Many people with psychological problems are themselves victims of violence.

Another myth says that people with mental illness are less intelligent than others. Many studies have shown that most mentally ill people have average or even above-average intelligence. Mental illness can affect anyone regardless of their intelligence, income level, or social class. This illness is not a character flaw and has nothing to do with being weak or lacking in willpower.

Although people with this kind of illness can play a big part in their recovery, they did not choose to become ill. Psychologically ill individuals are not lazy but only simply cannot snap out of their illness. This illness is not a single, rare disorder like other people say. It consists of a broad classification of many disorders including depression, anxiety, personality disorders, schizophrenia, eating disorders, and brain disorders.

Conclusion.

Words can hurt people who suffer from mental illness. Words such as crazy, psycho, or wacko can keep the stigma of mental illness alive. These words offend people with mental health problems. Even if many people use these words without intending any harm, it is still cruel to make fun of someone and mock him, unfortunately, his mental state.

How To Beat Depression

How to beat depression
Depressive state

In this article, I write about my personal experiences with depression, and about how I have learned to cope and to even eradicate it. I am sure that I am not alone in the fact that I have regular periods of my life when I am depressed, but knowing this fact does not make it any easier for me. I hope you enjoy reading this article.

I have recently spoken to my parents about my struggle with depression. Depression seems to be a dominant trait in my family, as said by my mum.

Just last week, I  suffered from a severe bout of this depression. However, from it was a truckload of lessons.  This period of my life seemed like the dark tunnel I always heard about. It was one to another. All hope seemed lost so I resented having a night out with my friends. The plan was to get drunk.

The next day, I felt really ill and hungover after having a very late night and as planned a huge amount of alcohol. I struggled to stay awake the whole day and as the day wore on I became even more depressed. I was overwhelmed by so much negativity in my head and even the fluids flowing in my body didn’t act otherwise.

Alcohol is never a remedy to depression, not even in excess.

When I was speaking to my parents about my latest period of anxiety and depression, their advice was very relieving. Thinking through every aspect of my life that I wasn’t impressed about was the first step they gave me. Talking about it and proffering solutions got me a step closer to my recovery and that was quite helpful.

It has been an attitude I have inculcated but not an easy one. Speaking up about my fears and having them starved while I focus on the positive side of life can only aid a happier and less depressing journey of life.

Depression, I will never want to experience that ever again. The sleepless nights, fatigue, low motivation, self-denial can take a toll on one’s health and productivity.

Conclusion

Seeking help and counsel, surrounding myself with families and friends that encourage and support me, staying positive and optimistic are ways I have devised to enjoy and live a depression-free life.

How To Establish Work-Life Balance

How to establish work-life balance

How do they do it?

You know the parents that work full time and manage to raise smart, healthy, and happy children?

They have a secret. That secret is maintaining a good work-life balance.

Have you ever heard the expression all work and no play makes a boring day? Well, the same goes for all play and no work.

Do too much of anything and you are bound to go stir crazy at some point or get cabin fever.

The good news for parents everywhere is that you can have the best of both worlds.

You can work hard and still find time to enjoy your family and your life. You simply need to create balance.

The most successful business people are also parents. They are individuals who have discovered the secrets of balancing work and home life.

So how do you do it? You simply need to adopt a few essential strategies.

Work-life balance is as simple as being able to balance the demands of work with your personal life. You can be successful and happy doing both.

Establish A Flexible Schedule:

The more rigid you are the less likely you will be to develop a work-life balance that is successful. You have to understand that there will be times when work requires more attention and other times when your personal life requires more attention. It’s easy enough to balance the two when you allow a little flexibility in your schedule. Always leave room for the unexpected, that way you are never taken by surprise.

Balance Your Workload:

You’ll need to make sure that you take on enough work to keep you busy, but not so much work that you can’t create balance in your life. Take on additional tasks at work only when you feel up to it and you know your family won’t be impacted by you coming home late a couple of nights in a given week. Likewise, don’t overbook yourself with birthday parties and anniversary parties.

Prioritize Your Activities:

There are going to be times when you can’t get everything done. Don’t panic! As long as you have prioritized your activities you’ll ensure that you take care of the most important ones first, and you can always catch up on less important activities later.

Delegate:

Any seriously successful work-life balancer knows that you simply can’t succeed unless you know how to delegate. Know who you can turn to in a time of need and who has a skill set that is compatible with your needs, so that when the occasion arises you can dish out some of the items on your plate to others. Delegation isn’t simply for official work tasks. You can also delegate personal tasks including the laundry and other chores.

Work-life balance is easily created when you schedule enough time for your interests and work tasks. You can do this by organizing your schedule and taking great care not to overburden your plate at any given time.

Also, remember that to achieve a successful work-life balance you must put your personal life at or near the top of your priority list.

If work is your only priority, you won’t succeed at both.

Finding meaningful and challenging work is an important aspect of any work-life balance.

Conclusion

As much as we love our children, it is important to feel we are successful and contributing to society.

The good news is you won’t have to give up one or the other.

You can manage to work and still raise your family, and accomplish both!

7 Things Every Man Should Know About The Prostate

Prostate cancer awareness
Blue ribbon symbolic for prostate cancer awareness campaign and men’s health in doctor’s hand

Next time you see your father, your uncle, or any older gentleman over age 60 or so, ask them about their prostate. If you know the guy well enough, and he feels comfortable enough around you (some would say too comfortable), he will surely share a whole litany of the common prostate problems that are troubling him, or have troubled him, or will trouble him in the near future. That’s because an enlarged prostate, benign prostatic hypertrophy, and even prostate cancer can be in the cards for every man past a certain age.

It’s the scary but true fact of getting old as a man. For instance, every man should know that prostate cancer is one of the most common prostate problems out there. It tops the list of cancers that affect men, happening in nearly as many men, roughly speaking, as breast cancer in women. Prostate cancer doesn’t get the press that breast cancer does, however, probably because most men would rather not speak about what’s happening down there.

The second thing most men don’t but should know is exactly what that prostate is.

A prostate is actually part of a man’s sexual organs. Located just below the bladder in a man, wrapped around the urethra, the prostate is about the size of a walnut. Its main job in the birds-and-bees scheme of things is to add fluid to your sperm during ejaculation.

And most of the time, men don’t even realize they have a prostate because it’s a hidden internal organ, but all men find out quickly what and where their prostate is when they suffer a common prostate problem.

For instance, all men should know that prostate issues aren’t just for older men. Men under 50 can get prostatitis, or an extremely painful infection of their prostate. This is a swelling of the prostate that can cause fever, a burning sensation during urination, and fatigue.

And all men over 50 should be aware of their number one most common prostate problem, which is an enlarged prostate, or benign prostatic hypertrophy. This benign, or nonfatal condition, is actually far more common in older men than prostate cancer, which should give some relief to older men when they know it.

Men should all be aware of the symptoms of benign prostatic hypertrophy, such as leaking and dribbling during urination, a weak urine stream, trouble getting started with urination, and even small amounts of blood in the urine.

Conclusion

And though benign prostatic hypertrophy is more common than prostate cancer, men should be aware that the two can go hand in hand. It’s not always the case, and many men with an enlarged prostate will never develop into cancer. But it’s good to keep your eyes out for both because they can have similar symptoms.

About Mental Depression

Depressed man

Leaving the bar past midnight after a time out with the boys, Francis waltzes to his Porsche ride gets in, and drives off. A picture of suave sophistication,  he looks an epitome of success owning a conglomerate of viable businesses. He arrives home to an empty living room and checks the kitchen to find his meal in the microwave. In anger, he punches the wall and walks to his bedroom where he shouts his wife out of her sleep asking why his food is not freshly cooked. In anger, she responds to him asking how he comes home late to expect to find her awake preparing a meal. In a fit of anger, he punches the pillow next to her and stutters about how women are ingrates and worthless. Picking a Moet from the fridge, he hits the bottle and sleeps on the couch – one of many nights in a row.

Depressive State

You see, Francis has a flip side of what is referred to as mummy issues. Having been abandoned by his mother as a young boy, he views women with suspicion and distrust, and though, seemingly happily married, the slightest provocation from his wife brings out the bitterness and pain of abandonment which he disguises as aggressive anger. Francis is depressed from years of suppressing his bitterness and pain. His successful and flashy lifestyle is a smokescreen to cover his highly depressed state.

Though not immediately recognizable as depression,  aggressive anger is a sign of depression in men. Although men are as likely to become as depressed as women, depression is more obvious with women. This is because, in women, it manifests outwardly in form of mood swings, binge eating, weight changes, and menstrual irritability.

Stress, sickness, and major lifestyle changes are some of the triggers of mental depression. Peer pressure and cyberbullying can also lead to mental depression especially in adolescents. However, while some depressive states cannot be clinically diagnosed, most people suffer from depression and overcome it without any negative side effects while others need to seek professional counseling to come out of theirs.

Research Shows

That depression starts around 32.5 years of age and is prevalent in adults between 18 and 25 years old. 8.7% of women have depression while 5.3% of men suffer depression. According to verywellmind.com, depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide. The total economic burden of depression is estimated to be $210.5 billion per year. 48% to 50% of the economic costs are attributed to absences from work as well as decreased productivity caused by depression while 45% to 47% of the costs are due to medical expenses, such as outpatient and inpatient treatment or the costs of medication.

In conclusion,

Depression is treatable and can be overcome. The first step is acknowledging that it is real and facing the facts then getting professional help to get out of that depressive state.

WHAT IS WELLNESS?

Menswellness
Wellness

The level of spirituality we hold with ourselves is one way in which we establish some wellness of mind. Spirituality, on any level, is a way to cleanse the mind and refresh the soul. Wellness is not only about the mind, though. It is a state of our whole being. Wellness is a state of mind, body, and soul.

Meditation

Meditation is a good way to achieve wellness for your mind. It provides you with the opportunity to reflect on the inside, to relax, to regroup. It gives you a chance to listen to your inner voice without the clutter of life around you.

Through the practices of spirituality and meditation, we have the capacity to maintain our minds as well as our bodies. The mind is a complex mechanism, and it can become overpowered and frazzled if we don’t give ourselves time to care for it.

Our mind works through various stages of operation, known as brainwaves. As we pass through times of our day and activities therein, our brainwave activity changes. Through these varying degrees of brain activity, our brain rests itself, and is therefore able to manage all of the information we collect.

When we don’t allow time for this process to occur, through rest and relaxation, our mind cannot continue in a state of wellness, just like our bodies can’t be healthy and well without rest.

Those who practice alternative and holistic medicine believe that the energy that flows through our bodies exudes from our minds also. They believe it is the main form of transportation for our nervous system to carry out communication.

Some techniques we can use to energize our minds include breathing techniques, music, and aromatherapy. These things allow us to reflect on our day and give our mind an opportunity to rest and replenish itself.

It is important to regularly make time to sustain our mental wellness, even as we make every effort to maintain our physical wellness. You can do both at once, too. We can relax our minds as we take a brisk twenty-minute walk at lunchtime. OR we can build muscle strength as we meditate during yoga.

Conclusion

Taking any opportunity to regroup is even the smallest thing, like listening to some soothing music, or relaxing in a warm bathtub will help your mind relax and re-energize. Advantageous for your wellness of mind. Even the smallest thing, like listening to some soothing music, or relaxing in a warm bathtub will help your mind relax and re-energize

TOP 5 SICKNESS/HEALTH THREAT THAT CAN AFFECT MEN IN LIFE

We kick started this series by talking about the heart diseases being one of the top threats men are likely to face as they grow in life; we’ll be moving unto the second one:

CANCER:

Cancer is one of the world’s leading cause of death, it is a dangerous, abnormal, malignant cell which is characterized with uncontrolled growth that has the ability to infiltrate and destroy normal body tissue forming a large mass of tissue which is called a tumour. Cancer develops when the body’s normal control mechanism and orderly process breaks down, meaning, when cancer develops, instead of old cells dying, they survive and they begin to grow and grow out of control causing new cells likewise to form when they are not needed leading to damage.

Cancer can start almost anywhere in the human body and has the ability to spread throughout the body as the human body is made up of trillions of cells. Cancer forms malignant tumours which unlike benign tumours can grow back after even being removed.

There are numerous causes of cancer, however, streamlined, we have three major risk factors, as best classified, and we have; inherited genetics, environmental/ toxic exposure and random chance based on lifestyle. Other factors include: Age, skin type, gender, medications etc. with the five most common cancers among men generally are Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, Bladder, and Melanoma.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; Lung Cancer is the number one killer among cancers with symptoms such as shortness of breath, noisy breathing, persistent coughing, wheezing, coughing up blood, chest pain, fever, and weight loss. Lung cancer is also considered the most preventable as smoking causes 90% of all lung cancers.

Prostate cancer is the No. 1 cancer risk for men as it is the most common cancer among men because it occurs with aging. It is the second cancer killer (behind lung cancer) as it affects the prostate gland however, it is rarely seen in men younger than 50 years of age. Prostate cancer often occurs without any symptoms, but symptoms are more likely if the disease is advanced, they include straining to pass urine, leaking urine, bloody urine, and bone pain. It is diagnosed with routine screening tests including a rectal examination to feel the prostate and a PSA (prostate specific antigen) blood test.

Colorectal basically known as colon and rectal is the third most common cancer in men. There are no symptoms in the early stages of colon and rectal cancers, thus the diagnosis is often made by routinely colonoscopy (screening of the stool) for what exactly? It’s to screen for blood that is not visible to the naked eye but can be found by testing the stool sample. Few symptoms which are a change in bowel habits, rectal bleeding, belly pain, weakness, and weight loss are observed as cancer progresses. Undergoing a routine screening can ultimately make Colon cancer nearly completely preventable with timely responses in the case of possible/early detection.

Bladder cancer is the fourth most common cancer in men. The most common symptom of bladder cancer is blood in your urine. Blood may change the color of your urine or show up as blood clots. Needing to urinate frequently and burning pain are other symptoms. However, there are no screening recommendations and surgery is the most common treatment. Additional treatments if warranted may include administering drugs directly into the bladder, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy.

Melanoma Skin Cancer also called Melanoma of the Skin is diagnosed in about 27 of every 100,000 men each year, the first symptom of melanoma might be a change in the size, shape, or colour of a mole or freckle. It’s found to occur in persons with a light complexion and lots of freckles and the best way to screen is by doing a complete skin self-exam every month. You should also let your doctor know about any sores on your skin that don’t heal and any new mole or lump and avoid long exposure to the sun or make use of sunscreens if it’s unavoidable.

TREATMENT:

Treatment depends on your age and how aggressive the cancer is, as major options include watching and waiting (which mean monitoring cancer but not starting treatment unless it progresses), radiation therapy (use of x-rays to kill cancer), chemotherapy (use of chemicals) and/or surgery (directly removing the tumour). Other treatment plan includes immunotherapy, targeted therapy or hormone therapy.

However, according to new findings, researchers discovered sub-types, that is, the same cancer type in one individual is very different from that cancer in another individual meaning that each requires a different treatment approach and a single generic method cannot be adopted to treat every individual irrespective they have the same type of cancer; that’s why it is highly recommended to always see your doctor when discussing treatment options.

REDUCING YOUR RISK

In as much factors such as age, race, family history, skin type, mutation at birth can’t be controlled, kindly note the most controllable and imminent factor in controlling cancer is one’s lifestyle. When properly managed it can give a great head start in the prevention and management of cancer. Develop a healthy lifestyle, make sure to get cancer screenings, exercise regularly, eat a healthy diet, maintain a healthy weight, don’t smoke, and avoid being a second smoker, protecting your skin from the sun and don’t have more than two alcoholic drinks a day. These will go a long way in reducing your risk for these common cancers.
