How To Beat Depression

How to beat depression
Depressive state

In this article, I write about my personal experiences with depression, and about how I have learned to cope and to even eradicate it. I am sure that I am not alone in the fact that I have regular periods of my life when I am depressed, but knowing this fact does not make it any easier for me. I hope you enjoy reading this article.

I have recently spoken to my parents about my struggle with depression. Depression seems to be a dominant trait in my family, as said by my mum.

Just last week, I  suffered from a severe bout of this depression. However, from it was a truckload of lessons.  This period of my life seemed like the dark tunnel I always heard about. It was one to another. All hope seemed lost so I resented having a night out with my friends. The plan was to get drunk.

The next day, I felt really ill and hungover after having a very late night and as planned a huge amount of alcohol. I struggled to stay awake the whole day and as the day wore on I became even more depressed. I was overwhelmed by so much negativity in my head and even the fluids flowing in my body didn’t act otherwise.

Alcohol is never a remedy to depression, not even in excess.

When I was speaking to my parents about my latest period of anxiety and depression, their advice was very relieving. Thinking through every aspect of my life that I wasn’t impressed about was the first step they gave me. Talking about it and proffering solutions got me a step closer to my recovery and that was quite helpful.

It has been an attitude I have inculcated but not an easy one. Speaking up about my fears and having them starved while I focus on the positive side of life can only aid a happier and less depressing journey of life.

Depression, I will never want to experience that ever again. The sleepless nights, fatigue, low motivation, self-denial can take a toll on one’s health and productivity.

Conclusion

Seeking help and counsel, surrounding myself with families and friends that encourage and support me, staying positive and optimistic are ways I have devised to enjoy and live a depression-free life.

About Mental Depression

Depressed man

Leaving the bar past midnight after a time out with the boys, Francis waltzes to his Porsche ride gets in, and drives off. A picture of suave sophistication,  he looks an epitome of success owning a conglomerate of viable businesses. He arrives home to an empty living room and checks the kitchen to find his meal in the microwave. In anger, he punches the wall and walks to his bedroom where he shouts his wife out of her sleep asking why his food is not freshly cooked. In anger, she responds to him asking how he comes home late to expect to find her awake preparing a meal. In a fit of anger, he punches the pillow next to her and stutters about how women are ingrates and worthless. Picking a Moet from the fridge, he hits the bottle and sleeps on the couch – one of many nights in a row.

Depressive State

You see, Francis has a flip side of what is referred to as mummy issues. Having been abandoned by his mother as a young boy, he views women with suspicion and distrust, and though, seemingly happily married, the slightest provocation from his wife brings out the bitterness and pain of abandonment which he disguises as aggressive anger. Francis is depressed from years of suppressing his bitterness and pain. His successful and flashy lifestyle is a smokescreen to cover his highly depressed state.

Though not immediately recognizable as depression,  aggressive anger is a sign of depression in men. Although men are as likely to become as depressed as women, depression is more obvious with women. This is because, in women, it manifests outwardly in form of mood swings, binge eating, weight changes, and menstrual irritability.

Stress, sickness, and major lifestyle changes are some of the triggers of mental depression. Peer pressure and cyberbullying can also lead to mental depression especially in adolescents. However, while some depressive states cannot be clinically diagnosed, most people suffer from depression and overcome it without any negative side effects while others need to seek professional counseling to come out of theirs.

Research Shows

That depression starts around 32.5 years of age and is prevalent in adults between 18 and 25 years old. 8.7% of women have depression while 5.3% of men suffer depression. According to verywellmind.com, depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide. The total economic burden of depression is estimated to be $210.5 billion per year. 48% to 50% of the economic costs are attributed to absences from work as well as decreased productivity caused by depression while 45% to 47% of the costs are due to medical expenses, such as outpatient and inpatient treatment or the costs of medication.

In conclusion,

Depression is treatable and can be overcome. The first step is acknowledging that it is real and facing the facts then getting professional help to get out of that depressive state.

WHAT IS WELLNESS?

Menswellness
Wellness

The level of spirituality we hold with ourselves is one way in which we establish some wellness of mind. Spirituality, on any level, is a way to cleanse the mind and refresh the soul. Wellness is not only about the mind, though. It is a state of our whole being. Wellness is a state of mind, body, and soul.

Meditation

Meditation is a good way to achieve wellness for your mind. It provides you with the opportunity to reflect on the inside, to relax, to regroup. It gives you a chance to listen to your inner voice without the clutter of life around you.

Through the practices of spirituality and meditation, we have the capacity to maintain our minds as well as our bodies. The mind is a complex mechanism, and it can become overpowered and frazzled if we don’t give ourselves time to care for it.

Our mind works through various stages of operation, known as brainwaves. As we pass through times of our day and activities therein, our brainwave activity changes. Through these varying degrees of brain activity, our brain rests itself, and is therefore able to manage all of the information we collect.

When we don’t allow time for this process to occur, through rest and relaxation, our mind cannot continue in a state of wellness, just like our bodies can’t be healthy and well without rest.

Those who practice alternative and holistic medicine believe that the energy that flows through our bodies exudes from our minds also. They believe it is the main form of transportation for our nervous system to carry out communication.

Some techniques we can use to energize our minds include breathing techniques, music, and aromatherapy. These things allow us to reflect on our day and give our mind an opportunity to rest and replenish itself.

It is important to regularly make time to sustain our mental wellness, even as we make every effort to maintain our physical wellness. You can do both at once, too. We can relax our minds as we take a brisk twenty-minute walk at lunchtime. OR we can build muscle strength as we meditate during yoga.

Conclusion

Taking any opportunity to regroup is even the smallest thing, like listening to some soothing music, or relaxing in a warm bathtub will help your mind relax and re-energize. Advantageous for your wellness of mind. Even the smallest thing, like listening to some soothing music, or relaxing in a warm bathtub will help your mind relax and re-energize
