Glad to have you back, you see it was quite fast; where were we? Right!

According to the Centers for Disease Control (C.D.C), the following are the top disease that kills men are:

Heart/Cardiovascular disease

Heart/Cardiovascular disease is the fifth killer of both men and women in Nigeria. According to other statistical sources; men usually develop heart disease 10 to 15 years earlier than women, and men are more likely to die of it in the prime of life. (American Heart Association) and about a quarter of all heart-disease-related deaths occur in men ages 35 to 65. (CDC).

The heart is like any other muscle and part of the body requiring blood to supply oxygen and nutrients other than that it is one of the most important organs in the human body. The heart’s needs are provided by the coronary arteries, which starts at the base of the aorta, spreading across the surface of the heart.

However, the coronary arteries are at risk for narrowing as a result of Atherosclerosis which refers to the buildup of fats, cholesterol, and other substances in and on your artery walls causing deposits known as called plaques, which build up inside the artery. If the arteries narrow enough, optimum blood flow to the heart muscle may be slowed down, restricted, or the plaque can burst, triggering a blood clot. The slowing of blood flow to the heart causes Angina (pain/discomfort in the chest), Coronary artery disease and if left unattended can lead to irregular breathing and heartbeat rhythm, Stroke, Myocardial infarction (in case of the blood clot), sudden cardiac arrest, peripheral vascular disease and ultimately death.

General symptoms range from chest pressure and pain down the arm, back and to the jaw in some cases, shortness of breath, sweating, indigestion, nausea, and decreased ability to do routine activities.

Heart disease risk factors include smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and family history. Family history can’t be controlled but other factors can make the risks minimized and properly managed.

A healthy diet does all the magic (well, most of it). Eating fresh, whole foods such as Fruits & Vegetables, Whole grains, Beans, Fish, Lean beef while avoiding frying, Low fat or fat-free dairy products without added sugar, Avocados, Good oil (Canola, safflower, etc). These food substances are low in fat, low in cholesterol, low in sodium, and high in fibre. They make a huge difference in lowering the risk of you getting a heart disease.

Staying fit and working out is another secret weapon in preventing heart disease, so what kind of workout is best for your heart? You guessed right, aerobics, a 30-minute walk or a 15 minutes jog a day can just do the trick till your body adapts to it whilst doing your heart so much good. However, for someone with an underlying heart condition or disease, aerobics, if done wrongly, can lead to exhaustion and unprecedented complications, kindly consult with a doctor or you could just book an appointment with one of our professionals to get you a workout plan tailored just for you.

HAVING A HEALTHY LIVER

Happy Hepatitis Day

Happy Hepatitis or Happy Liver Day, yay!!! and today being that we are going to be looking at some tips and certain food to promote a healthy liver and certain foods to also avoid…. Let’s get right into it:

The Liver is a key player in your body’s digestive process, it is a powerhouse, everything you eat or drink, including medicine, passes through it. It is about the size of a football and sits under your lower ribcage on the right side, performing a variety of essential tasks, ranging from the production of cholesterol and special proteins to help carry fats through the body, and producing bile to storing vitamins, minerals and even carbohydrates.

It also breaks down toxins like alcohol, medications and natural byproducts of metabolism, therefore keeping your liver in good shape is important, so it can do its job, maintaining proper health and wellness.

In caring for your liver there are certain food that should be reduced and certain lifestyle activities that should be limited, we will be highlighting some of these, and they include:

  • Alcohol
  • Added sugar
  • Fried foods
  • Salt
  • White bread, rice, and pasta
  • Red meat
  • Fast/Snack foods

Now we move on to certain food that are excellent for the liver:

  • Oatmeal
  • Coffee, it’s not know how it does it thing but research shows that it can lower your risk of getting liver disease
  • Green Tea
  • Water, there is this popular thing a friend always says to me, “Water therapy is the best” and honestly I can’t argue with this fact as water is not only essential for the liver but all parts of the human body and systems.
  • Vegetables
  • Nuts
  • Berries, blueberries to be exact
  • Herbs and spices
  • Supplements
  • Fatty Fish, fish rich in Omega 3

Bottom line is that, your liver is an important organ with many essential functions, therefore, it makes sense to do what you can to protect it.

Having routine checkups, regular exercises coupled with the foods listed above have demonstrated beneficial effects on the liver. These include lowering the risk of liver disease and cancer, raising antioxidant and detoxification enzyme levels and offering protection from harmful toxins.

At Men’s Wellness Circle we understand all these, that’s why we have made provisions through our Health and Medics services where you can book an appointment with one of our wellness consultants to discuss an existing body ailment or to just to run checkups; Likewise, fitting these foods as well as some supplements into your diet, is a natural and healthy way to keep your liver functioning at its best and through our Nutrition and dietetics service you can meet with one of our nutritionist who will guide you appropriately in setting up a proper diet plan fostering all round wellness in what you eat.

Finally another essential thing great to having a perfectly conditioned liver is engaging in regular exercises, regular daily exercises could be considered almost as potent as just drinking water duly; obesity and being overweight doesn’t just have the potential of only damaging the liver but rather negatively affecting other body components such as the circulatory system, respiratory system etc. that is why we recommend daily effective exercises and with our Fitness and weight loss service, not only will you get a proper workout program but you will be guided by the best instructors to having optimum weight and health.

8 REASONS WHY YOU NEED A REGULAR CHECK-UP

When it comes to cars, you know when to change the oil, check the water’s level, have the front end aligned, checking the tires, etc. however, in as much as you may be as diligent about caring for your car, you might not be exactly giving your body similar level of attention as you might be thinking that you are and besides a car comes with an owner’s manual telling you when a service could be due, and we have to realize that we don’t come with a manual.

Back to the basics, what is a Regular Health checkup? Regular health checkups are tests and examinations carried out to help find problems before they get worse. They can help find problems early when your chances for treatment and cure are better. In going for a checkup, your doctor will talk with you about your medical history, your family’s history of the disease and your lifestyle, including your diet, weight, physical activity, and with getting the right health services, screenings, and treatments, you are taking steps that help your chances for living a longer, healthier life. Killing two birds with a stone right?

Below shows a list of examinations that should be considered with respect to the suggested age

Test and examinations suggested for men at their specific age

Keep in mind that the following schedule/recommendations may differ for men who have — or once had — significant medical problems, or have other factors that might increase risks.

IMPORTANCE OF A REGULAR CHECKUP ROUTINE

The benefits of regular check-ups are numerous. Here are some of the benefits you should not be missing out on:

  • Reduce your risk of getting sick
  • Early detection of potentially life-threatening health conditions or diseases.
  • Increase chances for treatment and cure
  • Limit the risk of complications by closely monitoring existing conditions
  • Increase lifespan and improve health
  • Reduce healthcare costs over time by avoiding costly medical services
  • Form a good partnership with the doctor so treatment can be more efficient
  • Get updated on new medical information or technologies that are available in the case of a serious ailment

Eating plenty of fruit and vegetables a day, exercising at least 30-45 mins, practicing good body and dental hygiene, proper hydration, use condoms for both birth control and to help reduce the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, engaging in fun and recreational activities with family and friends can immensely help you in attaining optimum wellness.
